Anal Gland Expression
Canine Only (Cats on a case by case bases)
Service Description
INTERNAL gland expression by a qualified Registered Veterinary Technician. Why I do not recommend or offer external expressions: Performing external anal gland expressions, means putting pressure on the outside of the glands to push the fluid out. This method can partially empty the glands, however some fluid can remain. Glands in which aren’t emptied completely, can occur problems soon after expressing or hide current concerns the gland fluid may be showing. With external expression, there is an increased risk of anal gland rupture. In addition, this method doesn’t allow for detection of thickening of the glands or abnormal growths. With internal anal gland expressions, we can completely express all fluid and assess the gland for structural changes or abnormal growths. Not all dogs need their anal glands expressed nor do they need to have them continuously done! Not sure or have questions? Contact RVT Chelsey and we can chat!
